After the birth of my son I realised I needed to lose weight and get fit to be able to chase him around.I also signed up for the Newport half marathon for charity and needed help and support so joined Lliswerry Runners.

I have always run, as I played football since I was a school boy, so I was always running as part of training. I started taking it seriously when I entered my first marathon in 2010, My times were OK, but when I started to train with Lliswerry, with their structured sessions and training plans, I became quicker and got more out of my running and haven't looked back since.

Any message to newcomers?:

Lliswerry Runners didn't get the nickname 'The friendliest running club' by chance! Whether you're running 12 min/m or 5 min/m,the help, advice and encouragement you will get from both the coaches and other runners is second to none.

Any message to newcomers?:
Be inspired by the fast girls and boys but never feel pressured. This is the friendliest most inclusive club and the coaches and your new running friends will help you to achieve your goals and dreams. Come on in and bring your trainers!!

How did you start running?:
As a child I ran for Newport & Lliswerry at a high standard, when I became a senior I had a major knee injury so stopped all sports. I'd stacked on a lot of weight in my early adult life so started running again to get fit & healthy, now I run any distance up a marathon. Rejoining Lliswerry was the obvious next step.
Any message to newcomers?:
Never think 'I can't do it', with the right training and determination you can achieve any goals. Lliswerry is a very friendly club with lots of helpful runners & coaches who will help you achieve your goals.

What's your favourite running surface?:
Probably Road, with a mix of XC and trail for fun!
How did you start running?:
I started mainly as a way to de-stress and to get outside in the fresh air for some Me time. Someone told me about parkrun Newport - a FREE timed 5K every week! I was hooked from the first Saturday I turned up there alone! It switched on my competitive side, me against the clock. Running with people encouraged me to stick at it, I would have probably given up running as another fad by the time winter came along - but instead I got the running bug! and the the friendly Lliswerrians introduced me to a whole new world!
Any message to newcomers?:
The best thing to do is speak to club members at parkrun - there is always a few about every Saturday! Once you know one or two friendly faces, they will take you under their wing. Try a few training sessions during the week - no obligation to join straight away. There is no pressure to do any racing if thats not your thing. Just run for fun! Try a few different clubs before you decide - I went along to two other clubs that are more local to my home and still felt that Lliswerry was the best for me and I have never regretted that decision!

How did you start running?:

The company I worked for was helping to raise money for Kidney Wales and asked me if I'd like to run for the company on a team in the Cardiff 10k.

Any message to newcomers?:

I still remember thinking a kilometer was a long way when I started running. We all start slow. So don't worry about it. Just stick to it, and don't do too much too fast. One day you'll suprise yourself, and when you least expect it, someone will call you a runner :-)

I started with a run/walk along the canal. I signed up for the race for life, and wanted to run the whole 5k. I heard about Newport Parkrun and started on their 3rd event, met a lot of friendly people from Lliswerry runners and haven't looked back.
Any message to newcomers?:
Lliswerry is such a friendly club. It doesn't matter how quick or slow you are, everyone is welcome. It has a great team spirit.

Anything really - quite like running uphill, no idea why!
How did you start running?:

Turned 40, wanted to lose weight and gain some level of fitness before the inevitable heart attack arrived. I started jogging around the streets, Park Run came soon after closely followed by joining this club.

Any message to newcomers?:

1. Join the club, you are already fast enough (guaranteed), its brilliant for beginners and you will improve so much quicker than just jogging by yourself. 2. Don't try to do too much too soon, listen to your body.
